Turkish Textiles

In Turkey, textiles form the cultural web. Whether you are in Istanbul, the most cosmopolitan of cities, or a remote village in Cappadocia, the first thing people show you proudly is their textiles. Everywhere you look, there are beautiful hand-knotted carpets, intricate lace, embroidery, and exquisitely fine hand-woven cottons and silks. In this slide show, we'll see examples that range from the transparent harem silks, cloth of gold and silver brocades, intricate cut velvet to the peasant women's pantaloons, turkish bath towels and gypsy socks, all handwoven, handspun, and vegetable-dyed. Many samples and finished pieces to examine.
